Paper Lane Dubai and Basic Grey "Clippings"

A few months ago, I had the amazing opportunity to visit Dubai and hold a weekend Scrapbooking and Mixed Media workshop at the famous Paper Lane Store in Dubai. I have been blessed with many teaching trips overseas, but this one was pretty special to me. I was so proud to be teaching for them because this store which has been enjoying tremendous success overseas is owned and being run by a Filipina! Plus, the entire staff and management are also from the Philippines! I was in a foreign country but felt right at home when I was with them. 

Paper Lane, aside from bringing in the latest and greatest scrapbook and mixed media products also boasts of items that they design and produce themselves. Here is a sample of one of my favorite items in the store.. a sturdy chipboard album made of good quality - personalized to your very own specifications! You can request them to cut and shape an album in your name, your favorite word... etc!

I got to work on this album "Dubai" and I just received my DT box from BasicGrey containing the stunning "clippings" collection. I think it went perfectly well with the album.

I cannot thank Ms. Lani and Mr. Khalid enough for the time we spent at Dubai. They were one of the most gracious and generous hosts I have ever met. The ladies who attended the workshops were all very kind and funny too! I really had a great time. Plus the staff were wonderful. A few days back home here in Manila and I started missing them already. The store manager Ria, was kind enough to take us around the city, bring us to the best dining places, and show us the famous sights. Wow it was really something.

The Burj Al Arab - is a luxury hotel located in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. At 321 m (1,053 ft), it is the fourth tallest hotel in the world. Burj Al Arab stands on an artificial island 280 m (920 ft) from Jumeirah beach and is connected to the mainland by a private curving bridge. The shape of the structure is designed to mimic the sail of a ship.

Burj Khalifa, the tallest building in the world. The Burj Khalifa skyscraper is a world-class destination and the magnificent centerpiece of Downtown Dubai , Dubai's new urban masterpiece.  The world's tallest building is surrounded by hotels , must-visit shopping destinations  and a world of entertainment options.

My husband accompanied me to Dubai and it was such a different, learning experience for us. A real adventure! I wish I had more pictures taken but I ooohed and ahhhed so much that I would forget to snap pictures. The architecture and engineering feats you can see in Dubai is amazing. Really something you probably won't find elsewhere. Plus the food is so good! I am officially addicted to humus!

To top everything off (as if our host had not spoiled us enough during our stay there), Paper Lane gave me a surprise gift.... a SILHOUETTE!!! Talk about dreams coming true!! I have always wanted to get a Silhouette but there were other prioroties. So you can just imagine how happy I was when I learned that I was going home with my baby...

Here again is BasicGrey's "Clippings" collection used with my Silhouette....

And, to celebrate this new issue, all of the contributors are doing a fun blog hop in which we will talk about some of our favorite mixed media techniques.

I almost always start with a white base. It can either be a good thick cardstock or a watercolor paper. If I'll be using waterbased mediums (meaning activated with water) then I will definitely use watercolor paper. Reasons for these are 1. It absorbs and works with water better 2. There is less warping and 3. Better color saturation. 

Before even laying out the design, I play around with masks and stencils and add some amount of texture whenever possible. This is where Golden Mediums come in. Some of my favorites are Fiber Paste, Gel Mediums, Coarse Granular Gels, and Glass Beas Gels. I would have to dedicate separate posts on those mediums.

But here is an example of Golden Acrylic Mediums at work. I used regular white gesso here which was a bit watery. I needed the texture to be thick so I added a little fiber paste. Just a little of the paste made the gesso much much thicker. You will also notice some little bits of fiber texture in your medium. It does not show clearly in the picture but it looks really nice IRL.

To add the colors, I just used Pan Pastels. Now why not mists? Of course you can also use mists but if I want to be precise as to where I want the colors to be then I definitely take out my pan pastels to do the job. It does not contain moisture so it won't add more moisture to the already wet watercolor paper. I just have to let the texture paste dry completely before I rub on the pan pastels using a make-up sponge.

Splatters were from watered down metallic watercolors. I used a paint brush to water down some watercolor cakes and then flicked the brush a few inches above the paper.

The Golden Introductory Grounds Set was created to introduce professionals, students, and leisure artists to the versatility of Golden Acrylic Grounds. The texture here was created using a mix of white gesso and Golden Glass Bead Gels. My mix is usually one is to one but it depends on you how thick or textured you want the outcome to be.

  PanPastel colors are made using a unique manufacturing process requiring minimal binder and fillers, resulting in a rich, ultra soft, low-dust formulation. These professional quality colors are highly pigmented and have excellent lightfastness. Here is another example of a background created using stencils and Pan Pastels. There are several sets you can choose from but I went with the 20 pc. Painting Set, and the 20 pc. Tints set. It's the perfect combination of brights and tints for me.

MATERIALS: BAZZIL BASICS AND SIMPLE STORIES

To set the pastels, I simply mist over it using some clear metallic mist. So you get a clear coat over it with a bit of shimmer. I love the results.

BasicGrey "What's Up"

This is probably one of the most "fun" collections of Basic Grey I have ever worked with...

And you probably know me well... I don't do much talking, just pretty much a lot of showing...

Here are some pictures of this amazing line...

I also used a Crafter's Workshop template here and smeared over a mixture of texture paste and glass bead gel to achieve this effect. After it dried, I colored it with pan pastels and perfect pearls.

In this layout, I used the Zig Zag stamp and used Derwent Inktense blocks instead of ink to create the stamping.You just mist the stamp and then lightly rub your Derwent inktense blocks over the misted stamp. Press down stamp gently and lift to see the watercolor effect you have created with the inktense blocks and the misted stamp.
